Zeit und Ort der Handlung/Time and place of the story:
Salzburg, Ende des 19. Jhd.
Salzburg, End of 19th century

Stage:
- There's a theater stage including a temporary office of the director containing a
writing table, an easy-chair, a clothes' stand, coulisses, daisies, platforms, etc.

Scene 1:
- The director is awaiting his secretary. very impatiently. The secretary enters and tells him that the procedure of his request for a theatre concession has ended positively, and that a servant of the prefecture will bring the license very soon.

Aria about the three envelopes (the grafts):
- The secretary tells how he solved the problem, namely because of the three envelopes: one for the official in charge, one for the director zhere and the „most thick“ for the police-president.

Aria about the theater license:
Handelt von der Begeisterung und Zukunftsvision des Direktors in Erwartung der Genehmigung.
- Shows the happiness of the director while looking forward to receive the concession.

Scene 2 The administrative scene:
- The courier brings the concession. The director has to sign 7 copies for various authorities, where the 7th is the most important, if one is lost it has to substitute that one.

Scene 3:
- The sevretary tells the director that he had already invited personal now waiting outside the door for a song contest, especially a „dramatic-soprano“-primadonna for operas But the director is not interested in her because he wants to offer only operettas, vaudevilles, comedies, etc. But after knowing that Madame Isoldi is a very good friend of the police-president, he wants to invite her to sing, but the secretary shall call him out of his office for any reason before they could sign a contract.

Scene 4:
- Madame Isoldi enters worrying about the coolness the director receives her with, and reports her „great“ success at the theatre and within the society. She also uses her female attraction and let herself fall into the director's arms simulating a swoon. The director calls for a chair.

Scene 5:
- The Prop Man brings a chair which is breaking down under Madame Isoldi so that she falls again into the director's arms. The Prop Man says that those chairs are only requisites not intended to be used as seat. But he brings another one.

Scene 6:
- The director must apologize, and it's getting more and more difficult for him to refuse an engagement of Madame Isoldi. His secretary comes to tell him that he has a very important meeting at the bank. She is very angry because he prefers business („costermongering“) instead of art.

Scene 7:
- Once more his secretary enters in physician's clothes bringing the bad news that the director's wife has broken her leg and must be brought to the hospital. But Madame Isoldi doesn't allow him to go and forces him to sign a contract with her. She'll bring great success to the theatre.

Scene 8:
- This time his secretary comes in fireman's clothes to tell him that his house is burning. But the director cannot leave before he signs the contract und promises to perform great opera with her, too.

Aria of Madame Isoldi:
- She sings a great laud of the tragic opera. At the last syllabels of her aria, a trap-door opens and Madame Isoldi disappears.

Scene 9:
- The secretary appears again in normal clothes and is glad that Madame Isoldi has disappeared. The director is very angry, goes to the trap-door, helps Madame Isoldi, escorts the nearly hysterical and crying lady to the chair, consolates her, apologizes and promises to perform tragic operas, too.

Szene 10/Scene 10:
- Mademoiselle Dorabella enters and offers herself as primadonna. Madame Isoldi is fighting against her (with words), because she wants to be the primadonna.

Aria of Mademoiselle Dorabella:
-Lyric aria about love and nature. The director is very impressed and satisfied by her singing, but the two ladies continue their quarreling again. He wants to continue with he casting. Miss Dorabella introduces her friend, the tenor Manrico, whom she wants to have as partner in the main roles.

Szene 11/Scene 11:
- Madame Isoldi speaks about Manrico with irony, but Miss Dorabella protects him. He is her partner.

Quintet:
- The quarrel of both ladies continues. Manrico advices the director not to intervene. The director is very angry and doesn't know what to do now. Then he receives a very good advice by his secretary: the audience shall decide who will be the primadonna. The quarrel is going on, and the director decides to give up and close his theatre. Therefore both ladies change themselves inmediately and end their quarreling. Everything is in best order.

Duet:
- Both ladies are now the best friends looking forward to their fair collaboration.

Final Ensemble:
- All are depicting the nice future of the theatre: a full house, standing ovations by the audience. And this is due to the director's capacity. The director steps near to the audience and asks: „So I do not know; am I to order the printing of the posters ?“
