Cazzati gave the Sonata da chiesa (church sonata) the form slow-fast-slow-fast.
The impressive works for trumpet and strings date from this period. In 1665, Cazzati was probably one of the first composers to adopt the trumpet with strings as a solo instrument. In the service of the Duke of Sabbioneta (a small ‘ideal city’ located between Parma and Mantua, Sabbioneta has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008), between 1647 and 1650, he met and came to appreciate the trumpeter Orfeo Gentilli.
