Hugo Pfister was born on Sept. 7th 1914 in Zürich, Switzerland. There he was a primary school teacher for ten years before he made the decision to devote himself entirely to music. Pfister studied piano and theory with Marek Czeslaw. In 1956/57 he completed these courses of study with Nadia Boulanger (composition) at the national Conservatoire and at the Ecole Normale de Musique (composition, piano and orchestral conducting). Apart from this he became acquainted with the didactic methods and strncture of music teaching in French schools. As a result Pfister devoted himself mainly to composition. He has also written a lot of music for the stage and radio plays apart from numerous instrumental works. He lived in Küsnacht on Lake Zürich, where he gave music lessons at the teacher training college. Hugo Pfister died on 31st October 1969.
