In 1972, the Council of Europe declared Beethoven's “Ode to Joy” its anthem. In 1985 it was adopted by EU heads of state and government as the official anthem of the European Union. Without words, only in the universal language of music, it expresses the European values of freedom, peace and solidarity.

The present work is to be performed as a pure instrumental work (with 2 trumpets, horn, trombone (and tuba ad. lib.). The heroic character of the work certainly brings together a program enrichment with compositions by Giovanni Gabrieli or similar Venetian wind music.

ZUR AUSGABE

Die vorliegende Komposition BWV 574 entstand auf dem Hintergrund, dass Bach seine Reisen nach Hamburg und Lübeck inhaltlich aufgearbeitet hat.
Aufmerksam setzte er sich mit den Werken der großen Orgelmeister Nicolaus Bruhns (1665-1697), Johann Adam Reincken (1643-1733)und Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707), auseinander und sein Verlangen nach Musik in ihrer Gänze zu erfahren, haben auch die stilistischen Grundlagen seiner kompositorischen Handschrift deutlich erweitert.
