Background: Handel's Water Music
Handel's Water Music consists of three orchestral suites that were premiered on the Thames on 17 July 1717. At the invitation of King George I, around 50 musicians accompanied the royal barge on a separate music boat. During the trip – which took them to Chelsea or Lambeth and did not end until after midnight – the king had the suites repeated several times, so much did he like the new works.
Among the invited guests were Anne Vaughan, Duchess of Bolton, the Duchess of Newcastle, the Countess of Darlington, the Countess of Godolphin, Madame Kilmarnock and the Earl of Orkney. The trip took advantage of the river's tides and became an extraordinary musical event that has made Water Music famous to this day.
