ARIE CON TROMBA No. 21
Johann Joseph Fux (1660-1741)
Chi nel Camin d'onore
from Enea negli Elisi (1731)
for soprano, trumpet, piano (harpsichord, organ)
published and edited by Edward Tarr
Score with Set
He composed his opera Enea negli Elisi, ovvero Il tempio dell’Eternità (Köchel-No. 318) on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782) for the Empress’s birthday on 28 August 1731. It was his last opera. The concertante trumpet lends a heroic character to the aria sung by Gloria (the goddess of fame), “Chi nel camin d’onore“. The demanding trumpet part ascends to e´´´ on a trumpet in C. It was probably written for Johann Heinisch (fl. 1725-51), who was famous for his virtuosity and was praised by Fux. (We know that Fux in the following year 1732 recommended that Heinisch’s pay be doubled!) The main section of this da capo aria features only soprano, trumpet, and basso continuo and ends with a short passage of the strings, who continue to play in the subsidiary section while the trumpet is silent.
